If i build a house on the bank of a creek will I need to build a wall in the creek?

The creek is large for a creek and I noticed my neighbor has a wall inside the creek and I'm guessing he built it to keep his land from washing away as the wall is in front of his house and workshop. Should I build a wall for my creek?
